I talk about Gattaca

I had a writing professor in college who confessed to us that her favorite movie was the Ethan Hawke/Uma Thurman eugenics film, Gattaca. After that came out, she turned the semester into Gattaca-chat. Every class discussion that she could relate to Gattaca, by gosh she did.1
Now, far be it from me to criticize someone’s movie preferences. I have a bizarre infactuation with some really mediocre ones.2 It’s just, while Gattaca isn’t a bad movie by any means, I have a hard time trying to justify it as a favorite movie.
But maybe I was just taken aback by her sincerity when it came to Gattaca. Maybe it speaks to her in a way that I could never get. And that connection gives Gattaca some sort of gravitas that shadows its faults.
I certaintly could have just asked her why she had a thing for Gattaca, but I was a freshman and I was stupid.
But, c’mon, freakin’ Gattaca!? Really!?
